The pizza luce Story: Born in Duluth, Made for Everyone

Pizza luce opened its doors on Superior Street in 1993 with a radical idea: that great pizza should be creative, inclusive, and deeply rooted in community. Our founders believed that food is the most powerful way to bring people together, and every pie we craft reflects that conviction.

From our first wood-fired oven to the bustling kitchen we run today, pizza luce has always been about more than toppings. We source our produce from local Duluth-area farms, partner with regional cheese makers, and bake every crust from scratch using our house-fermented dough recipe that has never changed.

What started as one humble location on Superior Street has grown into Duluth's most beloved pizza institution — but our heart remains exactly where it began: in the hands of the people who make every order, and the neighbors who walk through our doors.

1993

The Doors Open

Pizza luce serves its first pie at 11 E Superior Street. The founding team's vision: adventurous toppings, house-made dough, and a dining room where everyone feels at home.

1997

Vegan & Veggie Menu Expands

We became one of the first pizzerias in the Midwest to offer a fully dedicated vegan menu, pioneering plant-based pizza long before it was trendy.

2003

Community Giving Program Launches

We formalize our community commitment by launching a structured giving program, donating 1% of annual revenue to Duluth-area nonprofits and schools.

2008

First "Best Pizza" Award

City Pages names pizza luce the Best Pizza in Duluth for the first time — a recognition we've gone on to earn eight times and counting.

2015

Kitchen Expansion & New Menu

A major kitchen renovation doubles our capacity and allows us to introduce our beloved rotating seasonal specials menu, highlighting local ingredients throughout the year.
